For a successful smile transformation, you need to take good care of your orthodontic appliance. However, we do understand that accidents happen and there is a chance that your braces might break. If you have recently broken your bracket, no matter the reason, our Smiley Dental Houston team recommends doing the following things:

Check the damage
Look to see if the bracket is still attached to the wire. If it isn’t, please remove it, keep it safe, and bring it into the office with you during your next appointment. If it is still attached, leave it there and place orthodontic wax around it to keep it from moving. If the bracket is still attached but is out of place, feel free to slide it back into position with a cotton swab.

Take control
Sometimes it’s common to have a protruding wire when you break a bracket. If this is the case for you, feel free to cut the wire with a pair of fingernail clippers. As you do so, try to clip as close to the bracket as possible. Then, cover it with orthodontic wax to keep it from cutting the inside of your mouth.

Make an appointment
The most important thing you need to do when you break a bracket is schedule an appointment as soon as possible. The sooner you get the bracket fixed, the sooner you’ll be back on the right alignment track. When you call our office, please tell us the situation so we can be ready to help you when you come in.

If you use these tips, you will be able to get back on the right track! Dr. and our orthodontic team care about you and your smile, and we want you to have the best orthodontic experience possible, which is why we are happy to give you the tips you need to succeed.
