Your child’s oral health is very important to our Smiley Dental Houston team, which is why we are happy to give you the answers to frequently asked questions about baby teeth and children’s oral health.

When will my child’s teeth come in?
Usually, the first tooth that erupts from the gums, which is typically the central incisor on the lower jaw, will appear around six months of age. The rest of the teeth will slowly grow in through time. By the time your child is three years old, they should have a full smile.

When should I take my child into the dentist?
It’s recommended to take your child in for their first dental checkup six months after their first tooth has erupted or by the time they turn one year old.

How can I help my child stop sucking their thumb?
There are many things you can do to keep your child from sucking their thumb. You can praise your child when they are successful, comfort them when needed, create a method or plan for stopping, or bandage the thumb.

How do I care for my child’s teeth?
When your child’s first tooth erupts, brush it twice a day with a child-sized, soft-bristled toothbrush and a rice-sized amount of toothpaste. Once two teeth grow in next to each other, it’s time to start flossing their smile.
